Trips For Kids #5

Today we removed and installed cranks!

Chain-ring, crank arms, washers, bearings, race, and locknut.

Cone wrenches in hand, I was impressed that everyone made this look easy.

Before I knew it the cranks were back in and Nova showed us the final adjustment.

not too loose, not too tight, just right

Any bike club member is welcome to attend, even for just a few sessions.

Next week we meet again at Trips For Kids, then winter break.

Trips For Kids #4

Today at Trips For Kids we replaced brake cables.

brake cable and housing

If you're having a problem with brakes or shifting, often it is bad cables.

Nova demonstrates installing the new cable

One student has already used store credit from the classes to purchase and install new tubes for bicycles.

I'm happy to announce that we have three students who will be halfway through the entire program (10 sessions) next week!

A few extra sessions will ensure that students who have missed a few days can still obtain a bike. Beyond that, Trips For Kids allows students to earn extra credit.

Trips For Kids #3

Today at Trips For Kids we worked on brakes.

We learned the name of brake parts such as "cable", "housing", and "brake lever".

Nova explaining three common types of brakes.

In groups we disabled the brakes and removed the cable from the brake lever.

Next meeting we will cover replacing cables and housing.
Often problems with brakes and shifting are due to cables and housing.
Cables and housing are usually replaced after a few years of use.

No Bike Club next Thursday (Thanksgiving).

See you December 1 at Trips For Kids!

Trips For Kids #2

Another successful meeting at Trips For Kids!

Today we all patched tubes.

Patching a tube is an essential skill and much less expensive than a new tube.

Before getting started at 1:30, we began designing our club logo.

After class we took a short walk to see this new mural at the Canal Alliance.

Next week is another Trips For kids meeting. 1:30-2:30 at 119 Larkspur, St.

See you there!

Today was the first meeting of Davidson Bike Club at Trips For Kids!

nationally acclaimed non-profit "Trips For Kids"

The people at Trips For Kids are super nice and the workshop is really impressive.

Everybody practiced removing and installing a tire on the wheel.
Next week is fixing a flat tube. Very important stuff for cycling.

See you there!

Ride 1

We had a delightful first ride today. 6.5 mile round-trip.

Davidson Bike Club Ride #1

We followed the bike sharrows down Woodland Ave to the Cal Park Hill Tunnel.

In Larkspur Landing we rode the bike path by the ferry.

Along the scenic Corte Madera Creek Path we stopped at Niven Park.

Awesome ride, thanks everyone! I look forward to spring when we will be adventuring even further along these paths.

For the next few months the David Bike Club will meet at Trips For Kids (125 Larkspur Street, San Rafael) to learn about bike mechanics and to earn points towards a bike or parts. Sweet! See you there!
